What makes a
C4W fellowship different ?

A mandatory secondment

Every fellow spends 3 to 6 months embedded in a partner company or innovation hub — turning academic research into applied, market-relevant knowledge.

A career development support

C4W offers an extensive training program, including research-based training, secondment, summer/winter school, options for additional scientific and transferable skills such as leadership, ‘out of the box’ thinking and Open Science abilities, presentations of research results.

What we mean by “Cleantech”

Cleantech — clean technologies — covers the technologies, products, services and business models that deliver superior performance at lower cost while reducing or eliminating negative environmental impact and improving the responsible use of natural resources. In short: solutions that decarbonise the economy, make processes more efficient, and protect water, raw materials and ecosystems.

At C4W, we group cleantech research into three complementary families — each one open to both technological and social-science perspectives, including the notion of a just transition:

  1. Energy transition Renewables, grids, storage, hydrogen, energy efficiency and decarbonised heat.
  2. Sustainable resource management Water, waste, recycling, circular economy, materials and depollution.
  3. Transforming economic and social sectors Mobility, buildings, industry, agriculture, food, and responsible digital technology.

Every C4W fellowship fits somewhere across these three families — whether the researcher’s background is in engineering, natural sciences, economics, or the humanities.
